Past simple vs. past continuous
When we use both of these tenses in one sentence, the past simple is used for the main thing that happened and the past continuous describes something that was in progress at that time.
[latex]\color{limegreen}{\checkmark}[/latex] I was having a shower when the doorbell rang.
✗ I had a shower when the doorbell rang.
[latex]\color{limegreen}{\checkmark}[/latex] I found some money as I was walking to school.
✗ I was finding some money as I was walking to school.
