Maths: Calculations

Mathematical symbols

1 Match the six symbols with their meanings.

2 Work with a partner. One person reads the questions, the other answers.

What’s 30 ÷ 3?

What’s 9 x 6?

What’s 100 – 78?

What’s 54 + 41?

What’s 10% of 120?

3 What are the missing symbols?

Big numbers

4 Write these numbers in figures.

Measuring distance, quantity and time

5 Put the words in the right list.

Grams, litres and metres are all part of the ‘metric system’.
The metric system was first used in France at the end of the 18th century.

For example:
10 millimetres = 1 centimetre
100 centimetres = 1 metre
1000 metres = 1 kilometre
1000 millilitres = 1 litre
1000 grams = 1 kilogram

6 We often use abbreviations for the words in Exercise 5. What do you think these abbreviations mean?

Maths puzzles

7 Read the puzzles and answer the questions. Then compare your answers. Explain in English how you calculated the answers.
