A day in the life of a mountain rescuer

By Annie Jones, Mountain Rescue volunteer, 19.03.2020

It’s hard to describe a typical day as every day is different! One day we get a call-out from an injured climber on a mountain and the next day, we’re rescuing a walker who’s lost in a forest at night. Because of the organisation’s name, you expect rescuers to spend all their time in the mountains but actually, we could be needed anywhere. Although the typical rescue takes place in mountains and hills, our skills are also useful in towns. In my six years as a volunteer for Mountain Rescue, I’ve helped rescue someone from an old factory and even a motorway. More and more, we also take people to safety from flooded homes.

Most people think we’re paid, like police or firefighters but we’re not. We’re all highly trained volunteers. Some of our team members are retired but most have paid jobs. I work from home so I’m usually able to respond to a call, whatever time it comes (and that might be three o’clock in the morning!)

You have to be fit and strong to do this work, whatever your age. We’re out in all weather conditions, carrying our equipment on our backs. Vehicles take us as far as they can into the mountains, but then we walk the next part of the journey. It’s hard work, but someone has to do it. And what could be more important than saving lives?
